Axes – Plurality of Weapons and Statistics

On an unrelated note, the plural of axis is axes. Seems Axes can be plural for 3 different spelled words, the other two being Ax and Axe. What is the difference between and Ax and an Axe? Nothing. They are spellings for the same item used to chop wood, and both could be used. If someone told you to draw some axes, either of the following would be fine.

Naturally you would draw the x-y axis picture because you love math and you never think to go into battle vs. some trees.
