I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!
This Saturday's feature is Viola sororia, Common Blue Violet. Family Violaceae.
Seed Information: The seeds are in a three parted pod that splits open when it dries or rehydrates. The pointier end of the seeds are set in either of one of the three boat or canoe-like parts of the pod. When this canoe-like structure dries or rehydrates, the seeds are pinched and launched out!
Seed Description: The seed have a rounded end and a more pointed end. The seeds are light brown with darker blotches that make the seed appear speckled. Along one side of the seed is a yellowish-light colored line leading to a notch.
Seeds were viewed using a dissecting microscope with magnification of 10x and 40x. Ruler marks are in millimeters (mm, metric system).
