Seed Saturday 20: Rhexia alifanus

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Rhexia alifanus, Savanna Meadow Beauty. Family Melastomataceae.

Seed Information: The seeds are found within a vase shaped fruit. When mature, the seeds can be poured out of this vase.

Seed Description: The seeds are brown. The seeds are some pyramidal shape. This shape is different from other species in the genus, from my experience.

Seeds were viewed using a dissecting microscope with magnification of 10x and 40x. Ruler marks are in millimeters (mm, metric system).

Seed Saturday 19: Albizia julibrissin

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Albizia julibrissin, Mimosa, Silk Tree. Family Fabaceae.

Seed Information: The seeds are found within a long, flat, bean pod of a fruit; as found in many in the Fabaceae family. The seeds are too big to get into an entire view with 40x magnification.

Seed Description: The seeds are brown. The seeds are rounded, yet sort of flattened. The seeds may have a dimple that has a rounded portion in form, reminding me of an imprint of one side of an open paper clip.

Seeds were viewed using a dissecting microscope with magnification of 10x and 40x. Ruler marks are in millimeters (mm, metric system).

Seed Saturday 18: Malva neglecta

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Malva neglecta, Common Mallow. Family Malvaceae.

Seed Information: The seeds of this plant are found in a wedge of the fruit. The fruit can have many wedges forming a circle (the fruit pictured has 15 wedges). From the wedge, the skin or casing can be removed and the seed found within.

Seed Description: The seeds looked curled into an ear shape. The seeds are thickest at the outer edge, thinner in the middle. The seeds are light brown, to red, to orange or yellowish.

Seed Saturday 17: Callicarpa americana

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Callicarpa americana, American Beautyberry. Family Lamiaceae.

Seed Information: The seeds of this plant are found within very attractive pink fruit. From the fruits I examined, often 4 seeds per fruit.

Seed Description: The seeds may have a brown layer or skin around them, whiter to pale yellow underneath. The seeds have a rounded side that would point toward the outside within the fruit, so that the round fruit can be quartered into 4 parts in terms of the contents of the seeds.

Seed Saturday 16: Ocimum basilicum

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Ocimum basilicum, Basil. Family Lamiaceae.

Seed Information: These are the seeds of basil, of which the leaves are used as a spice. If you put the seeds in water, they swell with a sort of gelatinous ooze around them.

Seed Description: The seeds are oval. The seeds are black. The seeds have little bumps all over them. The seeds have a node at the point of attachment to the plant.

Seed Saturday 15: Coriandrum sativum

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Coriandrum sativum, Coriander, Cilantro. Family Apiaceae.

Seed Information: This seed is of cilantro, the leaves of the herb used to spice up salsa. The seed is the spice coriander. Interesting two spices from one plant species are named different for different parts of the plant. The spices taste good to me.

Seed Description: The seeds are round or spherical with it a tip at one end. Longitudinal lines or ridges go from end to end of the seed. The seeds are light brown to yellowish in color. The seeds have a scent when crushed.

Seed Saturday 14: Sarracenia rubra subsp. Alabamensis

 I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Sarracenia rubra subsp. Alabamensis, Cane-Brake Pitcher Plant. Family Sarraceniaceae.

Seed Information: This species is listed as Endangered within the United States Endangered Species Act. The seeds are found in a 5 parted, capsule/pod. The seed has a similar shape to an orange wedge; three sided, one of those sides being rounded. The seeds surround the core with the rounded side facing out. There can be hundreds of seeds per pod.

Seed Description: The seeds are brown. The seed is three sided, with one of those sides being rounded. The flat sides of the seed may be indented.

Seed Description: The seeds are black. The seeds are somewhat tapered toward each end. The seed appears to have longitudinal lines going from end to end, the length of the seed.

Seed Information: The seed has a similar shape to an orange wedge; three sided, one of those sides being rounded. These seed surround within the berry with the rounded part facing out.

Seed Description: The seed is brown. Of the three sides or faces of the seed, two are more flat with in indention, the third side is rounded. The seeds are not very thick.

This Saturday's feature is Verbascum blattaria, Moth Mullein. Family Scrophulariaceae.

Seed Information: The seeds of this plant can stay viable for over 100 years!

Seed Description: The seeds kind of appear like a column with nobs around them, perhaps somewhat similar to corn on the cob if you have eaten that before, yet not quite. The column cut to pieces. The seeds are brown.

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Capsicum annuum, Bell Pepper. Family Solanaceae.

Seed Information: These seeds comes from bell peppers, but many peppers, hot, sweet, etc. come from this species. They are just different varieties.

Seed Description: The seeds are white. The seeds have an ear or snail shape curl. The seed coat isn't exactly slick, smooth, rather covered with tiny bumps, so to say.

Seed Saturday 6: Viola sororia

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Viola sororia, Common Blue Violet. Family Violaceae.

Seed Information: The seeds are in a three parted pod that splits open when it dries or rehydrates. The pointier end of the seeds are set in either of one of the three boat or canoe-like parts of the pod. When this canoe-like structure dries or rehydrates, the seeds are pinched and launched out!

Seed Description: The seed have a rounded end and a more pointed end. The seeds are light brown with darker blotches that make the seed appear speckled. Along one side of the seed is a yellowish-light colored line leading to a notch.

This Saturday's feature is Dionaea muscipula, Venus Flytrap. Family Droseraceae.

Seed Information: The seeds are set in a pedicel or receptacle that when it dries or rehydrates, the seed is pinched and launched out!

Seed Description: The seeds are shiny and black. They have a rounded end and a more pointed end. The more pointed end fits into the socket of the receptacle.

Seed Saturday 3: Portulaca grandiflora

I am highlighting the seeds of a plant species on Saturdays that I am calling Seed Saturday!

This Saturday's feature is Portulaca grandiflora, Moss Rose. Family Portulacaceae.

Seed Information: The plant makes a capsule, almost like a pill, that you can break into two halves.

Seed Description: The seeds look metallic in color and give off a sheen with a rainbow pattern, similar to a water bubble. The seed looks curled similar to a snail shell. The seed coat looks like they have little nobs on them.
